Bridging the Gap

There are very few frustrating situations in life where one can do little or nothing for it. Communicating effectively and accurately in a medical setting in a language different than your native one, is at the top of the list.

As has been commented in previous posts, Cultural Competency and Language mastering, are the main components of a good Medical Interpreter. But how do you get those assets?

There are very few certifications in the US that are nationwide standards in the field of interpreting. One of them is Bridging the Gap, a certification course that offers 40 hours of intensive training sessions that will let you dive into the cultural diversity, modes of interpretation, ethics and medical terminology, all of this necessary to start practicing in the field of Medical Interpretation. It is the first step in a long and continuous list of training sessions, new techniques and certifications, that any knowledgeable Medical Interpreter should go through to be able to face the daily challenges of the healthcare system.

Cross-Cultural Organizations

Cultural competence in healthcare professionals is a major issue when interpreting in a medical setting. If you are familiar with more than one culture and language, you'll be able to certify that any language has many intricacies and regionalisms, sometimes so different that even though you're speaking the same language a misunderstanding is very likely.

Medical Interpreters receive as part of their training a heavy section based on Cultural Competency. Because being cultural competent is being tolerant, knowledgeable and aware of the many differences among people without judging or giving a specific value.

The US government is very aware of the importance of cultural competence and so it offers resources. However, the non-profit organizations are the ones with a higher development in this sensitive topic.

These are the most important institutions in this field: CCHCP, CHIA, IMIA, PAMI, etc.
