Beauty, nature and healing

This idea sounded incredibly obvious after reading an interesting article published in Scientific American in the March 2012 issue, "Nature that Nurtures". This brief but powerful article made me think of different things.
Por supuesto esta idea era increiblemente obvia luego de leer un art;iculo interesante publicado en la revista Scientific American de Marzo del 2012, "Naturaleza que nutre". Esta artículo pequeño pero poderoso me hizo pensar cosas diferentes.
The article basically describes how studies are proving that seeing gardens, landscapes and nature's views can be used as peripheral medical treatments. Many images immediately came to my memory, dark and old hospitals, with scary walls, high ceilings, semi-illuminated rooms and aisles, and window views dripping with pollution, and age. No wonder chronic patients never get better, those views are nothing more than a vicious circle.
Básicamente, el artículo describe cómo ciertos estudios vienen probando que el hecho de ver jardines, paisajes, y vistas de la naturaleza pueden ser utilizadas como tratamientos médicos periféricos. Se vinieron a mi memoria muchas imágenes de hospitales viejos y oscuros, con paredes tenebrosas, techos altos, cuartos y pasillos a medio iluminar, y vistas de ventana que no son más que círculos viciosos negativos.
This also reminded me of a very interesting conference from TED, "Dennis Dutton: A darwinian approach to beauty".
También me hizo acordar de una conferencia muy interesante de TED, "Dennis Dutton: Un planteamiento darwiniano de la belleza".



Healing gardens are not new concepts, they've been used for quite some time, but as many other ideas, it takes a while and some statistically significant research studies to settle as something really useful. So it will probably be something that we'll notice more and more present in health institutions. Beyond the beauty that we can admire from gardens, this is something deeply rooted in our brains and evolutionary history, the notion of green fields and fruitful trees as good prospects to secure feeding and reproduction.
In this case, it'll be important by helping our nervous system to convince the rest of our body that healing is appropriate and overdue.
El concepto de jardínes que curan no es nuevo, se han estado utilizando por algún tiempo, pero como es el caso de muchas otras ideas, toma tiempo y algunos estudios de investigación con significancia estadística para que se establezcan como algo realmente útil. As;i que esto puede ser algo que vayamos a ver con mayor presenbcia en instituciones de salud. Más allá de admirar la belleza de los jardínes, esto es algo que que tiene raíces profundas en nuestros cerebros e historia evolutiva, la noción que los campos verdes y árboles con abundantes frutos son buenos prospectos para asegurar la alimentación y reproducción.
En este casom será importante ayudar a nuestro sistema nervioso a convencer al resto de nuestro cuerpo que sanarse es apropiado y necesario.

Project Glass and the Sixth Sense

Every once in a while, you get surprised by something new in the technology development department. This time is no different, Project Glass is a concept that Google has been working ion for the past two years, somewhat similar to "The Sixth Sense". It's an HUD (head-up display) and it basically shows what technology could do in the near future for us on a real time-basis, literally "on the go". For sci-fi movie addicts, it'll be easy to recognize this technology from the movie "Minority Report", which is a recurrent reference for educational technology experts. De vez en cuando uno queda sorprendido por algo nuevo en el área de desarrollo de tecnología. En esta oportunidad no es diferente, el Proyecto Glass es un concepto que Google ha venido desarrollando en los últimos 2 años, algo similar a "El Sexto Sentido". Es un marco de lentes que básicamente muestra la tecnología podría hacer en nuestro futuro cercano en tiempo real, literalmente "sobre la marcha". Para los adictos de películas de ciencia ficción, será facil reconocer esta tecnología de la película "Minority Report", que sirve como una referencia recurrente para los expertos de tecnología educativa. How would this technology help me as a Medical Interpreter? Well, it wouldn't hurt to have it handy for the ever-increasing list of acronyms in the medical lingo, it is common to forget the meaning of each one of the thouisands of acronyms that you can come across during a medical interpretation, maybe the glasses could be connected to www.medilexicon.com or www.acronymfinder.com as default to help you out.

I have a better idea, it'd be better to have it integrated with augmented reality displays of human anatomy and physiology. Speaking of user interface, wifi is the free norm, but how about PsyFi in the near future? A technbology that could allow us to have an implanted receiver in our body for wifi signals that could be controlled with electrical impulses from our brain. Too much? Who knows!
Tengo una mejor idea, sería mejor tenerlos integrados con demostraciones en realidad aumentada de anatomía y fisiología humana. Hablando de interfase de usuario, wifi es la norma gratuita pero, ¿qué les parecería el PsiFi en el futuro?. Una tecnología que nos permititrría tener un receptor implantado en nuestro cuerpo para recibir señales de wifi que podrían ser controladas con impulsos eléctrticos desde nuestro cerebro. ¿Demasiado?, ¡quién sabe!

Abundance and Future

This blog has been dormant for some time. The people and pieces necessary for an on going posting routine are now in place. In order to celebrate our return to the blogosphere it's opportune to discuss about good and new possibilities. Even though we hear constantly about this from small areas in society (technology, culture, medicine, etc), it is seldom done on a global basis, the so-called "big picture".

Este blog ha permanecido durmiente por algún tiempo. Pero las personas y las piezas necesarias para una rutina de publicación continua están ahora en su lugar. Para poder celebrar nuestro retorno a la blogosfera creemeos oportuno discutir sobre nuevas y buenas posibilidades. Incluso cuando escuchemos sobre esto constantemente desde pequeñas áreas en la sociedad (tecnología, cultura, medicina, etc), en raras oportunidades se lleva a cabo de forma global, o con la llamada "visión general".

So our best way to do it is by celebrating the infinite possibilities that can arise from human imagination, work and global effort. We'll start by commenting on a TED conference video, Peter Diamandis: Abundance is our future.

Así que la mejor forma de hacerlo es celebrando las posibilidades infinitas que pueden surgir de la imaginación humana, trabajo y esfuerzo global. Empezaremos comentando el video de la conferencia de TED, Peter Diamandis: Abundancia es nuestro futuro (subítulos disponibles en muchos idiomas).

This conference gives us a reminder of the world we live in now compared to the world our ancestors lived in 100 years ago. But the most important of all, what will happen in the very near future that we can't ignore. More than 3 billion new people will have internet access within the next 8 years.  Most of them (if not all) will come into the world wide web from developing and underdeveloped countries, countries with a gigantic cultural and linguistic diversity, richness and potential. Not the best nomenclature for nations with reduced number of opportunities, and although having access to the internet doesn't secure higher standards of living by itself, it'll definitely empower people with the capacity to control and further their knowledge, learning and  interests. That's good news for the economy, but more importantly to our world in general.
Esta conferencia nos recuerda el mundo en que vivimos en comparación con el que vivían nuestros ancestros hace 100 años. pero lo más importante de todo, es lo que ocurrirá en el futuro inmediato y que no podemos ignorar. Más de 3 billones de personas nuevas tendrán acceso a la internet dentro de los siguientes 8 años. Muchas de estas personas (si no todas) ingresarán a la web mundial desde países en vías de desarrollo o subdesarrollados; países con una gigantesca diversidad, riqueza y potencial linguístico y cultural. No es la mejor nomenclatura para las naciones un número reducido de oportunidades, y a pesar de que el acceso en sí a la internet no asegura estándares de vida más altos, si podrán (definitivamente) darle el poder y la capacidad a la gente de controlar y mejorar su conocimiento, aprendizaje e intereses. Esas son buenas noticias para la economía, pero más importante, para nuestro mundo en general.

As a Medical Interpreter exposed to cultural and linguistic diversity on a daily basis, it is beyond my fascination to be part of the acculturation process of countless immigrants in the United States, helping them survive in this complex society one day at a time. And who knows, maybe I was lucky enough to know the future best protein folder, nanotechnology engineer, musician or politician that can help us solve our future problems.

Como un Interprete Médico que está expuesto a la diversidad linguística y cultural a diario, esto sobrepasa mi fascinación de ser parte del proceso de aculturación de incontables inmigrantes en los Estados Unidos, ayudándoles a sobrevivir en esta sociedad compleja un día a la vez. Quién sabe, de repente tengo la suertede conocer al mejor plegador de proteínas, ingeniero nanotecnólogo, músico o político que pueda ayudarnos a resolver los problemas del futuro.

English Proficiency - July 31st

English proficiency is the central idea of becoming part of the Canadian, US or UK culture, depending on where you are. People should be able to acquire it in a prudent amount of time. It is in the meantime that an interpreter is needed to secure that the communication and information is relayed accurately between the communicating parts.

El conocimiento del idioma Inglés es la idea central de asimilarse a la cultura canadiense, americana o británica, dependiendo de dónde esté. Las personas deben adquirir dicho conocimiento en un tiempo prudencial. Es en el entretiempo que el interprete se hace necesario para asegurar que la comunicación e información sean pasados de forma correcta entre las partes comunicantes.

Regionalisms - July 31st

I spoke about this phenomenon in previous posts, speaking Spanish doesn't mean that you will be fully understood in every country in Latin America. This turns out to be more of an entertaining situation turned embarrasing than anything else.

A great new website I found is TuBabel, a page where you can search for those words that make no sense at all for a non-native Spanish speaker, but whose meaning conveys a lot of information, useful or funny.

Yo hablé de éste fenómeno en entradas anteriores, hablar Español no significa que te vas a hacer entender en cada país de Latinoamérica. Esto es una situación de entretenimiento que se vuelve embarazosa más que otra cosa.

Una nueva página web que he encontrado llamada TuBabel, una página donde puede buscar aquellas palabras que no tienen sentido para los parlantes de Español no nativos, pero cuyo significado lleva mucho contenido de información, útil o graciosa.

Bilingual Search Engine - July 23rd

Why is a Search Engine a way to feel myself discriminated? Yahoo, MSN , Google, and most of the other search engines have information in many languages. However, the largest amount (and quality, supposedly) of information is available in English. The language that is read and spoken by the academic world. Those who are interested in reading about anything can go to the internet and feel lucky to find millions of links, or less if you speak Spanish for example.

Anyway, the web offers a lot of possibilities, and one in particular, is of my interest right now: a Bilingual Search Engine. Yes, as romantic as it sounds, now you can use this tool to search for information in two languages at the same time. You write a term or word of interest in one language and then you select the two languages you want the search to be performed, and you'll get side by side results in each of the two selected languages. Enjoy this bilingual tool!

Porqué debo sentirme discrimando al utilizar un motor de busqueda en internet? Yahoo, MSN , Google, y muchos otros motores de busqueda tienen información en muchos idiomas. Sin embargo, la mayor cantidad (y calidad, supuestamente) de información está disponible en Inglés. El idioma que es leido y hablado por el mundo académico. Aquellos que estamos interesados en leer sobre cualquier cosa nos podemos dirigir a la internet y sentirse con suerte de encontrar millones de vínculos, o menos si es que hablas Español por ejemplo.

De cualquier forma, la red ofrece muchas posibilidades, y una en particular, es de mi interés en este momento: un Motor de Busqueda Bilingue. Si, tan romnántico como pueda sonar, ahora usted puede usar esta herramienta para buscar información en dos idiomas al mismo tiempo. Escriba un término o palabra de interés en un idioma y luego elija entre dos idiomas para llevar a cabo la busqueda, and podrá obtener listas de resultados desplagados en columnas lado a lado, en los dos idiomas selecccionados. Disfrute de esta herrmaienta bilingue!
